Iron Bear

With us far too briefly on this planet, Iron Bear was Cotton Wolf's Iditarod running mate. A relentless warrior in the face of immense physical difficulties, he was a powerful guide, and best friend to us all. He inspired the vineyard at this extraordinary coastal escape.

Cotton Wolf’s retreat on Oregon’s southern coast required a four-mile ascent up a boulder-strewn mountain road from the tiny coastal town below on the Pacific Coast Highway (US-101). Here, time and worries fell away. The views after an exhilarating day of adventure were almost as good as the perfect runner's high, and the mountain’s symphony—with Pacific Ocean waves as the accompaniment track—was at once soothing and revitalizing. Visitors to Cotton Wolf’s eco-friendly guest cottage enjoyed a saltwater spa, solarium, greenhouse, and organic gardens. The burgeoning organic Pinot noir vineyard was the quiet gem silhouetting the forest's edge, welcoming guests to experience the land’s long-held secrets, known best by those who have tended this land for millennia alongside the elk, the cougars, and the mountain's lone grey wolf.
