Summer Solstice

In lovely harmony the wood has put on its green mantle, and summer is on its throne, playing its string-music …

–Thomas Telynog Evans

What does heat trapped in warm wind between the trees in a forest sound like? Does it hum? How does the bay breeze enliven or diminish sounds of waves crashing to shore?

What are decibel levels right now?

During this adventure, we'll take time to feel the brightness in compressed, high frequencies, and we'll entertain one another with the sonic stories we conjure together in the coolness of the shadows, having gathered at least a dozen biological and geological sounds from our environment.

We'll discuss anthropogenic noise and its impacts on soundscapes. Consider the noise from the commercial building's air conditioning system as it overtakes the buzzing as bees work inside this thistle's bloom. Are the bees affected by the noise? We'll investigate this inquiry alongside many others.

Do you know the sacred story of the bees? Should humans make sure to tell our secrets to them

Have you heard the sounds of their cries?

We'll discuss their stories, from myth and legend to the science that helps explain their sounds (remarkably more than what comes from the rapid  beating of tiny wings).
